John was one of those "really nice guys" in our apartment complex that I was totally not interested in. For some reason, and to my somewhat annoyance, we both had friends who tried to set us up. I guess they thought we'd make a good match. But I was not only not interested, I was only 19 years old! And determined to go on an LDS mission in a couple years. John was just starting to enjoy being a bachelor.
We ended up going on a date, but I had John sit on my deaf side (I’m deaf in one ear, but nobody can really tell), so I could hardly hear what he was saying the whole time! Yes, I was rude, but oh well! John got the hint. Even though we didn’t hit it off right away, we shared many of the same friends and continued to get better acquainted through spending time with them.
About a year after our first date, John went out with one of my roommates and I went out with John’s good friend on a double date. We ended up talking to each other the whole time! Three days later, after hanging out more, I just knew that John was “the one”. I knew that I was no longer going on a church mission.
Nine months later John finally decided that I was “the one” too. I had to learn to be very patient! And we might have waited another year if one of John’s younger brothers hadn’t threatened to get married before us! We officially got engaged the day his brother announced his marriage, and we scheduled it for two weeks before they were getting married. Because we dated for almost a year before getting married, we worked through all of the kinks and have had the best marriage ever!
